Bull City Commons on Display for AIA Triangle Tour

On September 7, 2024, Bull City Commons (BCC) was one of the venues on the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Triangle tour of residential architecture featuring newly commissioned architect-designed houses. This annual event showcases innovative and architecturally significant homes in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh.

The AIA tour primarily features innovative single-family homes, but this year, BCC was included as a highlight, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the world of cohousing. This inclusion provided an excellent opportunity for over 300 attendees to learn about intentional multi-family housing projects and the role architects play in creating these vibrant community spaces.

A few BCC members kindly opened their apartments for the tour and, throughout the day as they mingled with guests, shared their experiences of working with withArchitecture, formerly known as Weinstein Friedlein Architects. They also fielded questions on the building, their units, and the draw of living in a cohousing community.

The architects at withArchitecture have a rich history of designing intentional, community-focused living spaces, and were the architects of Durham Central Park Cohousing's building, which was twice featured on previous AIA tours.

The check-in tent welcomed over 300 people during the tour, which lasted from 9am-5pm.

The tours showed three differently sized apartments (studio, one-bedroom, and three bedroom) along with the common kitchen and multipurpose room. Kate talks to a couple about her apartment and about living in cohousing.

BCC co-founder Jim showed guests around his apartment and answered all their questions on how BCC got started and how it works.

Several withArchitecture associates donned unmissable red-t-shirts to take visitors on tour, and answer questions about the AIA tour and the building.
