Bull City Commons Cohousing Wins AIA NC Design Award

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Triangle Chapter recently honored Bull City Commons Cohousing with the Housing Merit Award for its community aspirations and design. The five-floor condominium project was designed by withArchitecture of Durham, NC.

The AIA jury praised our building's common spaces, which are designed to foster community, and its innovative use of a single-loaded corridor to create a gathering space. The jury also noted that the project is responsive to the residents, the community, and the surrounding environment.

The award was presented at the AIA Triangle's annual Design Awards Gala in November 2024. The award video is linked at the bottom of this post.

Following is a transcript of the video announcing the award:

A housing merit award goes to Bull City Commons co-housing, an architecture project located in Durham, North Carolina. Bull City Commons co-housing takes a brownfield site with various site constraints and, using creative problem-solving, provides an elegant design solution that engages the residents and its surrounding community. The jury had a fondness for the common spaces for shared meals and building community and the utilization of a normally utilitarian single-loaded corridor to serve as a gathering space. The end result is a unique co-owned housing development that is responsive to the residents, the community, and its surrounding environment that is well deserving of this recognition.

The AIA Triangle Chapter is a non-profit organization that represents architects in the Triangle region of North Carolina. The chapter's mission is to promote the profession of architecture, to improve the quality of the built environment, and to serve the public interest.
